Ngo in a BOX

Doug and I from Adevia Software have long been using Ubuntu ( a Linux distribution) for our primary operating system and advocate for non-profits to embrace the free software movement. Here’s another example of why.

NGO in a Box from Base is finally out. I’ve blogged about this free software previously and the wait is over. You can go and download a fantastic collection of software or order a disc. NGO in a Box is a collection of essential tools for running a small-to-medium sized NGO and it all runs on Ubuntu. According to Tactical Tech the authors, “NGO-in-a-box strives to provide specific recommendations and forms of distribution based on a grassroots approach. It delivers up to date peer-reviewed and selected tools and materials based on the experiences of informed practitioners and field experts.”

This set of software has been carefully chosen for activist and advocacy organizations with a particular focus on developing countries although I am sure it’ll be of interest to many organizations involved in other social services activities.

So what’s it got in it? Well here’s a start:
* Office Suites and Word Processing
* Finance and Fundraising
* Project Management and Collaboration
* Volunteer and Staff Management
* Web Browsers and Email
* Instant Messaging and Telephony
* Surveys
* Anti-virus
You can download the cds and an ISO and it comes with a booklet as well. Free software is fun!
